Scholars rarely read beyond the academy; we (collectively and frequently) wonder why so few beyond the academy read scholarship. This huge disconnect would be lessened, I think, if we were a little bit more interdisciplinary and less orthodox in our views. For years, I have admired the work of Malcolm Gladwell on the pages of the New Yorker precisely because he crosses so many boundaries. He seems driven by ideas not academic disciplines. I could not be happier that he now has a blog. I subscribe, via an RSS feed. But, as one of his readers noted in a comment (and I paraphrase) it is not a blog for a reader in a hurry. It is worth the time and a reason why web 2.0 is really revolutionary. For years, I subscribed to the New Yorker, but finally I cancelled my subscription because I could never read it and developed a stack of newspaper guilt.
